Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, has become known as the “Iceberg Capital of the World”. Located on the Twillingate Islands in Notre Dame Bay, off the north eastern shore of the island, the town is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of Lewisporte and Gander.
Twillingate is located along the famous “Iceberg Alley”, a large corridor of ocean that runs from Greenland down the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. The best time for viewing icebergs is mid May to mid July. There are boats tours available in the town for iceberg viewing and whale watching in season.
On my trip to the historic town, I enjoyed amazing views of sea ice in Notre Dame Bay from the lookout at the lighthouse. I cannot wait to get back in summer and go hiking on the Twillingate RockCut trails.
Furthermore, I would like to thank Twillingate local, Charles Pelley, who was kind enough to welcome me, show me around town and show me his family’s special place, “The Little Red Stage”. “The Little Red Stage” is very special to the Pelley family of Upper Jenkin’s Cove, Twillingate. The late Mr. Edwin Pelley was a well known fisherman in the area and his beloved stage was swept away by a storm surge in 2004.

“The Little Red Stage” is very special to the Pelley family of Upper Jenkin’s Cove, Twillingate. The late Mr. Edwin Pelley was a well known fisherman in the area and his beloved stage was swept away by a storm surge in 2004.
Devastated by the loss of the stage, the Pelley family were able to rebuild the stage in 2007 before Mr. Pelley’s passing. Edwin’s son Charles moved back home to the Cove and cares for the stage and enjoys a traditional outport life.
The family and the story of the stage have been featured on local TV show land and Sea.
