Port De Grave NL Canada is a picturesque fishing village located on the North side of Conception Bay and is well known for its annual Christmas boat lighting ceremony and decorating. In fact, the festive event celebrated its 25th anniversary this past December, adding a little extra sparkle to a beautiful East Coast Christmas. Not only are most of the fishing boats in the harbour brightly and uniquely decorated, the real big highlight is a gigantic crab pot Christmas tree which can be found located near the historic community church. The impressively creative Christmas light display consisted of many traditional Newfoundland crab pots stacked on top of one another to form a mountainous tree adorned with colourful holiday lights, bright orange buoys for bulbs and a spectacular glowing star to top it off!

Down at the Port De Grave harbour wharf visitors to the event could park their vehicle and walk around the docks to admire the holiday boats. There is no cost of admission but remember to dress warm because the temperature is always colder next to the North Atlantic Ocean thank it is further inland. Picking up a coffee, tea or other hot beverage to sip on while completing a walking tour of the fishing boat displays is always a great idea to add a little extra tasty warmth to your adventure. One of the holiday boats included the Grinch as a mate and a cleverly decorated dip net on the upper deck. Another large vessel had a crab pot decorated in multi-colour lights hanging perfectly from the bow like a sparkly pendulum. The residents and fisher-people of Port De Grave Newfoundland take great pride in this annual Christmas tradition and it is my favourite NL holiday light display to enjoy over during the festive season. Be sure to add Christmas in the Harbour to your Winter island travel itinerary if visiting the province during December to early January.

The annual Port De Grave Christmas in the Harbour was an incredible holiday light display and I look forward to checking it out each year when possible. Many Newfoundlanders take a traditional road trip each December to the community to admire the colourful, creative and glowing boats. The many fishing vessels docked in the seaside town are uniquely decorated creating a beautiful floating holiday display. This particular boast display included Santa Claus waving from the rooftop!

The reflection of the Christmas lights on the sea is so beautiful at night. It’s most ideal to visit the annual island holiday event on a calm evening with no wind.

This large boat ranked as a favourite during my excursion to Port De Grave for the annual boat lighting. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are very proud of their fishing boats and often have incredibly beautiful paint jobs or interesting names.

I am not completely sure of the total number of boats that participated in the annual Christmas boast display, but I would estimate it to be about 50-60. Each year thousands of people come to Port De Grave to view the twinkling Holliday lights.
