Happy New Year adventure seekers! I hope you all enjoyed a nice holiday season with family and friends and that everyone is on the mend! Santa brought me a beach house for Christmas this year and I am over the moon with excitement. Located in Back Harbour, on North Twillingate Island, my new home overlooks spectacular Notre Dame Bay and the famed “Iceberg Alley” sea route. In the Springtime I will able to watch icebergs float by from the comfort of my shed with wood stove. In fact, Twillingate is known as the iceberg capital of the world and tourists travel to the East Coast Province each Spring and Summer to try and catch a glimpse of the icy bergs as the float down the coast of NL from Greenland and Canada’s Arctic. I look forward to all the New Year has in store!

The last few weeks have been extremely busy as I moved across the Province and got settled in! We had a light snowfall for Christmas but lots of wind!! However, in true adventure seeker fashion I did not let the hurricane force winds and icy gales keep me inside - I bundled up in layers, stuck on my crampons and headed out on the many coastal hiking trails for some fresh salty ocean air. Back Harbour is also known for incredible sunsets over the wild North Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the holiday season I was blessed with many spectacular sunsets and sunrises as well-this place is a magical adventure seeker paradise and I’m so grateful to call it home. Lots of room for adventurous guests and looking forward to sharing more about my inspiration for the beach house and future plans!

Finally, I was fortunate to fit in a quick road trip to the town of Gander to catch the last show of The Irish Descendants Christmas tour at The Gander Arts and Culture Centre. Special Thank you to frontman and musician Con O’Brien for the lovely invite. It was an extra special holiday show series featuring Mark Manning and Aaron Collis from local folk band Rum Ragged. It was fantastic and a must see Christmas show when visiting beautiful NL during December.

Happy New Year from North Twillingate Island Newfoundland Canada. I bundled up in my adventure coat, put on my crampons ans heading out on the hiking trails in search of Nanny’s Hole. The comically named place has been a hot topic on the NL meme pages this holiday season. Newfoundland and Labrador has a lot of hilariously named places such as Dildo and Port Aux Bra to name a few.

An old rotting fishing boat sits alone on the shores of North Twillingate Island Canada. Oh the stories I imagine this old vessel could tell of rough days and weather on the ocean. Fishing has been a way of life here for years and years.

Newfoundland Canada Christmas around the Harbour 2023 was very relaxed. Garnish is a very small rural fishing community located on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland. My sister-in-law is from the destination and I done so much laughing when she sent me this photo of a camper van decorated for the annual Garnish Santa Claus Parade. I thought you guys would chuckle at this!

This was my favourite Christmas paradise float in the Garnish NL Santa Claus parade. It reminded me of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and cousin Eddie. If you know you know hahaha!

The ocean sunsets on North Twillingate Island NL are truly spectacular. My mummer and I are beyond fortunate to be able to experience the magic of Notre Dame Bay every day.

This fantastic and unique wood carving of a historic NL root cellar was gifted to me by my dad for Christmas and I couldn’t love it any more. The local handicraft was hand carved in Marystown on the scenic Burin Peninsula of the island. The artist is talented local artist Harold Moulton and his art work can be found at the Marystown Model Ship Museum.

Root Cellars were used in the early days of NL for storing root vegetables throughout the Winter months on the island. Many cellars are still in use and scatter the landscape in Twillingate.

It keeps me warm and I don’t smell like woodsmoke if I don’t want to! It’s great!

Mummering in Newfoundland and Labrador is one of my favourite holiday traditions during the twelve days of Christmas. Basically, Mummering is a tradition whereby individuals dress up in foolish disguises to hide their faces and body shape, using simple items from around the household such a pillowcases or underwear. The Mummers then go visiting homes in the community and the home owner attempts to correctly identify the mysterious mummer. There is drinking, music, food, dance and lots of fun and laughter. The Mummers then continue on to the next house and hopefully the new friends come along as well! Pictured above with my aunt Edith and a homemade button accordian prop from my childhood growing up around the bay.

In fact, hurricane force winds lifted a wooden row boat into the air and it literally felt like I was living in the Wizard of Oz. Luckily it didn’t cause any damage to my new home. The shed is the perfect hideaway for taking in a good island storm.

December was cold and icy here on the island with intermittent periods of mild temperatures where everything melted briefly. I have really been enjoying the wood stove on those cold Winter days for extra warmth. Can’t really beat the heat of a fire!

The iceberg watching shed is also my new studio and it was extra cozy decorated for the holidays with the peacefulness and beauty of fresh snowfall. However, I’m ready for Summer already hahaha.

Colourful fishing stages in rural Newfoundland and Labrador communities are a photographers dream. Visitors can find many of the brightly painted sheds with wharves scattered along the rocky island coastline. This photo was taken in Durrell.
