My first Winter in my new community of Twillingate has been cold lol! It’s been cold and icy and that wind blowing violently down from Canada’s Arctic can be a bit bone chilling! However, I am enjoying all of the opportunities I get to explore the different local surrounding communities and meet the local folk. My most passionate hobby is beach-combing and you really never know what kind of sea treasures you may find while roaming the shores of the island. The ocean sunsets have become an evening ritual for me when the weather is fine and I can’t wait to enjoy in the Summer when the weather is warmer and the days longer. Check out the amazing views from the peak of Barrick’s Island in the photos below, overlooking Notre Dame Bay.

Horse Mussels can be found around the beaches when the tide goes out. Horse Mussels are not the same as the tasty blue mussels served at NL seafood restaurants. Humans do not like the taste of Horse Mussels and they are not considered a commercial seafood species. They can be distinguished from blue mussels by their larger size and purple tint.

The rugged island landscape is something that I am very grateful to be able to experience on a daily basis in my beautiful home province. No matter what area of NL you visit, the viewpoints are truly incredible.

Twillingate Newfoundland is home to some world class hiking and trail running. The short hike to the top of Barrick’s Island is short but worth the trek to the summit to enjoy panoramic landscape views of back Harbour and Notre Dame Bay.

Watch out for slippery seaweed and kelp along the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador when the tide goes out. I grew up roaming the shores through this stuff in search of sea treasures.

The weather in Newfoundland and Labrador is extremely unpredictable and can change in the blink of an eye. Make sure you bring a wide range of clothing in order to be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Sea Caves and crannies along the NL coastline are fun to explore and poke around in while beach-combing. I always like to explore these little areas in search of shells and sea glass - and sometimes for a break from the wind!

Calm Winter Days like this one make the harsh island Winter a little more bearable. There isn’t anything much more peaceful to me than a flat calm ocean. “Just like da glass bottle” as we say here in NL!

I really would like to get for a snowmobiling adventure! I may need to head out to the West Coast of Newfoundland for an adventure of that nature.

The ocean views of Notre Dame Bay and scenic “Iceberg Alley” never get old for me. However, visitors must be careful to stay a safe distance from the edge of cliffs and beware of hidden cornices.

Hikers should keep a close eye out for various lichens on rocks when exploring the island. These unique lichens play an important role in our wild coastal environments and their health and growth reflect the well-being of the ecosystem.
