Located in the quaint fishing village of Quidi Vidi Village, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Mallard Cottage is a unique restaurant serving up fresh local food. Since November 2013 the Chefs have been showcasing Newfoundland and Labrador’s vast array of wild game, seafood and produce from local hunters, fishers and foragers.
Additionally, the historic cottage itself is a work of art. A local fisher-folk family, The Mallard’s, resided here for generations beginning in the late 18th century up until the early 1980’s. In 2011, Mallard Cottage was purchased by Chef Todd Perrin and team and they began the large task of restoration. Their hard work and dedication to preservation was recognized with the Southcott Award for excellence in the preservation of the built heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.
I couldn’t resist the corn-dusted fried cod cheeks as an appetizer. They were served with a tasty mallard aioli and apple mustard slaw. It was so delicious I devoured it and was too stuffed to order an entree.
The focaccia bread, made by Mallard Cottage Chef du Cuisine, David Woods, was to die for !! It came with a herb and honey infused house-made butter. It was so tasty I ordered a loaf for takeout.
The menu includes fresh locally sourced fare such as wild game, seafood and produce. Examples include rabbit, moose, codfish, lamb and so forth. Menus change based on seasons and availability.
Rabbit art on the rustic wooden walls of the cottage style eatery. Be sure to add Mallard Cottage to your bucket list when visiting St. John’s, Newfoundland.
