Whoa, just a minute there, Cinco de Mayo isn't celebrated in Mexico??? Wait, what?

Outside of a small area in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo isn't a thing in that country. It is actually an American day created for Mexican immigrants to celebrate their heritage. It does however commemorate an actual event that took place in Mexico. In the Battle of Puebla in 1862 a small but mighty Mexican army defeated a much larger and powerful French army. This seems a feat worth celebrating.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed to learn that Cinco de Mayo is American (sorry, Americans) and not Mexican. However, in Canada we love celebrating everyone's culture, especially when it includes good food. Cinco de Mayo is more than an excuse to enjoy Mexican food and drinks, because you never need an excuse to eat Mexican cuisine. Even so, if you have no dinner ideas and it happens to be May the 5th, Mexican is a fine option.

We chose to tryout a local area favourite, Sea Change Brewing Co. in Beaumont famous for its craft beers and taqueria and so did everyone else. So we sat outside on the patio. One can never really know how to dress for the weather during the spring in Alberta, so the best bet is to plan for all of the seasons to happen and choose layers. I did not and got a little chilly so we added a second stop to our evening, were we could find an indoors table and visited Analog, Alberta's self-proclaimed nerdiest brewery.

Analgo's video game themed beers and taproom makes for a fun night out. This destination is full of games and video games for you to play while you enjoy sampling some of Edmonton's craft beers.

The owners at Analog's two favourite things are beer and video games. They found a clever way to combine gaming and tasting. If you are brave enough, why not let a roll of the dice pick the beers to make up your tasting flight?

With dishes like ceviche, 6 kinds of tacos, quesadillas and burritos, Sea Change in Beaumont is an excellent Cinco de Mayo choice.

This burrito has housemade smoky beans, rice, pickled red onions, pico de gallo, crema and salsa verde to name a few of its ingredients. It is likely the best value on the menu too, because it is BIG.

As they say at Sea Change, and probably approve of at Analog - Cheers nerds!

It was a perfect patio day, sunny and hot. That is, until the sun dips behind the building and you find yourself in the shade with a cool Canadian spring breeze.
