It seems especially fitting to have a Highland Games in beautiful Canmore, Alberta as one of the first Highland Games known was organized by King Malcolm III Canmore (1058-1093). Held at a flat meadowland (the Brae O’Mar) along the River Dee, this sporting event was used for a royal contest to find the fastest and strongest man in the kingdom with the necessary stamina to carry Malcolm’s word across the land.
Certain aspects of the games are so well known as to have become emblematic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the heavy sports, especially the caber toss. While centered on competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, and Scottish heavy athletics, the games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish and Celtic culture.
Canmore Highland Games also hosts the British Car & Motorcycle Show in collaboration with The Rolling Sculpture Car Club as part of our many simultaneous events. Come see this exciting new event.
Heavy Sports:
These events are a real thrill to watch at the Canmore Highland Games. The Heavies consist of Putting the Stone (light), Putting the Stone (heavy), 56 lb. Weight Throw, 28 lb. Weight Throw, 22 lb. Hammer Throw, 16 lb. Hammer Throw, 56 lb. Over The Bar, Sheaf Toss, and Caber Toss. The sports area is located on the Southside of Centennial Park adjacent to 5 St. and 6 Ave. One of three entrance gates is at this point. The Tug of War is a demonstration of strength, skill, and teamwork – very exciting to watch!
Highland Dancers:
The Highland Dance demonstration runs throughout the day. Dancers may also be seen in the Official Opening Ceremonies as they participate in the Massed Fling, to the immense enjoyment of those in attendance.
The dance area is located in the southeast corner of Centennial Park.
No seating is provided; please bring your lawn chairs.
Pipe Bands:
The piping and drumming exhibition takes place during the Games on Sunday, September 5.
Early afternoon watch the Drum Major Workshop, followed by the Pipe Band exhibition.
The finale of the day is the closing ceremony of the Canmore Highland Games.

The Canadian International Air Show is Canada’s largest and longest-running airshow.
Join us over the Labour Day Weekend right in the heart of downtown Toronto for this thrilling Air Show.
The Canadian International Air Show is a jam-packed air display showcasing modern military jets, vintage warbirds, thrilling aerobatics, and of course our beloved Canadian Forces Snowbirds celebrating their 50th season.
The airshow is held over Lake Ontario with the Centre Stage located directly across from the Liberty Grand, Exhibition Place on the south side of Lakeshore Blvd. The show can be viewed clearly along the shoreline and public parks on the waterfront from the Humber Bay Bridge to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. We do ask that attendees follow current COVID protocols and practice socially distancing across the 14 kilometers of prime viewing area.
