On a cold winter afternoon, I visited the newly reconstructed Bridgenorth Causeway, officially known as the James A. Gifford Causeway, located in Bridgenorth, Ontario, just north of the City of Peterborough. This important transportation link spans the water between Bridgenorth and Ennismore, crossing the edge of Chemong Lake, and has recently undergone significant construction to improve safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for both drivers and pedestrians. The reconstruction of the James A Gifford Causeway now features a dedicated walking path, making it easier for visitors and locals to safely stop, explore, and appreciate the surrounding landscape.
Along the pedestrian path, new signage has been installed to highlight the rich history of the Bridgenorth Causeway, the development of the local highway system, and the role this crossing has played in connecting communities throughout the Peterborough region. These interpretive signs provide valuable historical context, helping visitors better understand the importance of the causeway to Bridgenorth, Chemong Lake, and the surrounding area. During winter, the contrast of snow, ice, open water, and passing traffic creates striking visual scenes, making the location especially appealing for photography.
