We took a serene and relaxing paddle down Big Creek in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. Launching our canoe from a small parking lot on the 3rd Concession, Big Creek wound its way through the breathtaking beauty of the Carolinian forest in Norfolk County. We experienced towering Sycamore, Black Walnut trees, and Virginia Creeper vines, which is why Big Creek in Norfolk County, has been given the nickname the “Canadian Amazon”.
Our route was approximately 9 km, and took us just under two hours. In mid-August the water level was perfect, but could be faster and higher in the Spring. There were many overhanging trees as well as a number of log and branch obstacles to navigate throughout the journey. There are a few local guiding companies which offer equipment rental and a shuttle to the starting point. You can also paddle Big Creek, in Norfolk County, Ontario on your own, but need to make sure you shuttle a vehicle to your ending point in Port Royal, Ontario so you don’t have to paddle back upstream.
Big Creek was so serene and peaceful. The waterway meandered and curved through beautiful Carolinian Forests. Big Creek in Norfolk County Ontario has been nicknamed the Canadian Amazon.
There were a number of spots throughout the paddle on Big Creek where it was necessary to paddle around obstacles, fit through tight spaces, and duck under logs, trees and greenery. It made for an exciting journey.
The water level was perfect and the air temperature was comfortable. A beautiful day out paddling made us have pretty big smiles on Big Creek in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.
