Puffins: Adorable coastal birds found on the rocky shores of Newfoundland

By Lori King in Newfoundland 1006 views 25th Apr, 2023 Video Duration: N/A   Elliston, NL A0C, Canada

If you're visiting Newfoundland and Labrador, and you're a nature lover, then you definitely don't want to miss the chance to spot puffins! These cute little birds, measuring about 6-8 inches in height, can be found along the coast of Newfoundland.

One interesting fact about Atlantic Puffins is that they shed their beaks in the winter, leaving them grey, but in the spring, their beaks grow back bright orange, which makes for a stunning sight for photographers. While the exact reason for this phenomenon is not known, one theory is that it helps camouflage the puffins against the wooded areas, protecting them from predators.

Atlantic Puffins typically live to be about 20 years old and make their homes in burrows they dig into grassy cliffs. Inside the burrow, they create a cozy nest using feathers, and the female lays a single egg. Both parents take turns protecting the egg, and after approximately 45 days, a "puffling" – the term for a baby puffin – hatches. How adorable!

I am watching this video many times! When I was in Newfoundland last year, I so wanted to see the puffins but alas, was informed it was the wrong time of year as they had by that time left the cliffs and perhaps now, I know their outer bills may have also fallen off. I will research to see if I can find an accessible colony of the tuffed puffins we have here on the pacific coast, they are elusive though. May be easier to just return to Newfoundland in the summer! :(happy)   More ...
