Inside Buffalo Airways: Exploring the Heart of Northern Aviation

Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of aviation as we take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the most iconic aviation companies.

Buffalo Airways, based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, has a rich history dating back to 1970. Originally founded by Joe McBryan, affectionately known as "Buffalo Joe," the airline has become synonymous with rugged northern aviation, serving remote communities and supporting various industries across Canada's North. Their most recent endeavour involved securing the government contract to assist in combating the wildfires that ravaged Yellowknife during the summer of 2023.

As you step into the hangar, you'll be greeted by the sights and sounds of aircraft maintenance, fueling operations, and flight preparation. From vintage DC-3s to modern turboprops, Buffalo Airways boasts a diverse fleet that reflects its commitment to reliability and versatility in challenging northern conditions.

But the hangar tour isn't just about the aircraft – it's also an opportunity to delve into the company's fascinating history and unique culture. It's a living testament to the spirit of adventure, resilience, and camaraderie that defines northern aviation.

Whether you're a fan of Ice Pilots, a seasoned aviation enthusiast or simply curious about life in Canada's North, this behind-the-scenes tour offers a glimpse into a world unlike any other.

NOTE: Hangar Tours are free, from Mon-Fri but, have to be booked in advance.
