Spillimacheen, BC with Steamboat Mountain Chalets

“The Steamboat Mountain Chalets are for travelers who enjoy a rustic, backcountry feel. There is no valet parking or hostess greeting you at a front desk. Here at the chalets, you check in and then most of your day is left to your own discretion. If you like country cottages surrounded by adventure, wilderness and backcountry nature acoustics these chalets are for you.”

Wahoo! I am all packed up, music playing, sun is shining and there is a big grin on my face as I am driving down Highway #95 heading towards Spillimacheen, British Columbia, Canada. Spillimacheen is located 64 kilometres south of Golden, BC and 39 kilometres north of Radium Hot Springs, BC. It is wilderness country!

My destination for the next 2 days, on this leg of my tourism research, is Steamboat Mountain Chalets (www.steamboatchalets.com). Excited? Yes I am… as this is my first visit to the country cabins surrounded by wilderness, wildlife, wetlands and mountain ranges.

Steamboat Mountain Chalets are situated in the Columbia Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Just west of the accommodations are the Purcell Mountains and over to the east are the Rocky Mountains. Travel down the highway one can access the Bugaboo Mountain Range and across the way are the Columbia River Wetlands (The largest intact wetlands in North America).

In essence, the Steamboat Mountain Chalets are located at the doorstep of adventures like canoeing, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, off roading, cycling, birding, and much more.

On my first day at Steamboat Mountain Chalets I could not resist exploring the area on foot. There are mountains in every direction and the wetlands across the street were calling me out. I quickly learned I could launch my canoe, practically, from across the street… and the mountain peaks, OMG…. they were staring me down all the time. Mount Ethelbert and Horeb – both of the Purcell Mountain Range – were looking at me straight in the eye.

In total, there are 6 units at Steamboat Mountain Chalets. The experience of staying with this accommodation is never a crowded one. Some units are self contained cottages while a few of the smaller units are sleeping rooms with bathrooms only. Each cabin / cottage varies in size and privacy. All chalets are made of wood construction, sporting front patios, BBQs and outdoor furnishings. From the outside they look like rustic cabins straight out of a Farley Mowat novel.

Inside each accommodation the design, furnishings and floor plans vary. They are simple, clean and comfortable accommodations. My unit (#3) was a fully self contained accommodation furnished with a living area, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, laundry and a really, really comfortable bed. For entertainment purposes there was a television and wood stove. For work there was the internet.

That is a good thing for me. No internet, no work for this cat.

All of the units of this Spillimacheen, BC, Canada accommodation circle a backyard open-air courtyard. The large grass lawns of the courtyard are complimented by flower gardens, statues and, yes, an outdoor fire pit with cottage country chairs for those late night gatherings roasting shmores. Resting up against the backyard courtyard of the Steamboat Mountain Chalets is a sheer rock wall of a mountain. Just beautiful!

One of things I love about Canada is all of the different types of accommodations suited for all types of vacations. The Steamboat Mountain Chalets are for those travelers who enjoy a rustic, backcountry feel. There is no valet parking, doorman or hostess greeting you at a front desk here. Nope, here at the chalets, you check in and then most of your day is left to your own discretion. If you are a manicure, spa-like, pampering individual Steamboat Mountain Chalets are, most likely, not for you. If you like country cottages surrounded by adventure, wilderness and backcountry nature acoustics these chalets are for you.

The Steamboat Mountain Chalets are “eh Team” type accommodations. The chalets are located at the doorstep of majestic scenery and epic adventures. That is right up our alley. Pampering, posh, and catered too on every whim is not our thing. Comfortable accommodations, nature, wilderness and getting dirty with adventures suites us just fine.

Thank you again Steamboat Mountain Chalets for a great time and your hospitality. We sure do hope we get invited back again soon. There is still lots we would like to do and photograph promoting the Spillimacheen, BC region like canoeing the wetlands, hiking the Bugaboos and maybe, even , throwing out a fishing line for some trout. Never did get to try out the BBQ.

Oh yeah! Across the highway are train tracks which is ideal for railway enthusiasts.
