Galloping Goose Regional Park

Detailed Description:

One of the more popular urban and woodland recreational biking and hiking activity trails in the Regional District of Victoria, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada on southern Vancouver Island.

Galloping Goose Regional Park is the first trail system in Canada created from a historic railroad route into a multi-use hiking and biking trail system. It was a unique program converting abandoned railway lines into trails. These same train tracks at one time transported goods and passengers during the 1930's to 1979 . In the early days of rail travel on Vancouver Island this route was referred to as "The Galloping Goose".

Today, the Galloping Goose Regional Park measures over 151 hectares and is a very popular hiking, biking, jogging, horseback riding, and walking trail exploring backyard rural neighbourhoods , fields, forests while peering down over rocky cliffs and rushing rivers. For over 60 kilometres the Galloping Goose Trail explores the forest lands west of Victoria.

The Galloping Goose Trail starts in Victoria, BC and winds its way through the communities of Saanich, Colwood, Metchosin, Langford, View Royal, and Sooke.   The Goose is a well maintained trail traveling through many different wilderness eco-systems. Because it is level in most areas and flat it is an ideal route for all ages including families with children.  Many sections of the trail are wheelchair and baby stroller friendly.  The long hiking trail has many access points and exit points. The trail can be explored very easily in smaller sections.

Sooke Potholes is a highlight destination located along the route. Other highlights include the Roche Cove Regional Park, Kapoor Regional Park Reserve, Matheson Lake Regional Park and the Selkirk, Charters and Todd Trestles.

Parks which are not on the trail but easily accessed a short distance from the trail include the Thetis Lake Regional Park, Mill Hill Regional Park, Devonian Regional Park and the East Sooke Regional Park.

There is no camping along the trail, although there are campsites nearby on some sections of the trail. The route is mainly for day use only route. Please do not litter or loiter, but feel free to enjoy!
