Originally, in 1912, the community of Sorrento was named "Trappers Landing". One of the earliest settlers in the region, James Kinghorn, soon saw the light and named the community Sorrento because the village reminded him Sorrento, Italy. Today, the community is referred to as "The Heart of the Shuswap" and is one of the main community destinations on Shuswap Lake.

In the summer months the recreation activities enjoyed in Sorrento by locals and visitors include golfing, camping, boating, swimming, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, scuba diving, hiking and water skiing. Public boat launches located at the end of Markwart Road in Sorrento and west of the community at Meeks Point provide access to Shuswap Lake.

Scuba divers enjoy exploring the underwater marine life at the mouth of the Adams River and around Copper Island. Fishing is also an activity seen on the lake. In the winter months, after the snow has fallen, the Village of Sorrento transforms into a winter wonderland. The mountain trails, back country gravel roads and the lakes in the back country region of Sorrento are popular destinations for cross country skiing, snowmobiling snowshoeing and ice fishing.

The Village of Sorrento is a small town community, decorated in murals, providing most of the important amenities required by travelers for a successful adventure like accommodations, gas stations, pubs, retail stores, tackle shops, restaurants, post office, marinas, banks, grocery stores, laundromats and campgrounds.
