Much of the Fraser Valley was first the hunting and fishing grounds of the First Nation people of British Columbia, Canada, Canada. In Mission, on the banks of the Fraser River, it was once the home to the Sto:lo First Nation people.

The Xa:ytem First Nation Historic Site in Mission is a testiment to that time. The site is home to pit houses, a longhouse, native arts and a 3 stone building entrance dating back 9000 years. It is the oldest First Nation building in British Columbia.

In the late 1800s the priests arrived in the region preaching religion. They soon claimed the banks of the Fraser River and established the 1861 St. Mary`s Mission and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The community of Mission took its name from St. Mary`s.
