Central Alberta Parks & Trails

The Elk Island National Park is a unique mixture of aspen forests, wetlands, black spruce bogs, lakes, creeks and grasslands. It is a complex eco system for wildlife which once roamed the southern boreal plains and grassland plateaus of the region.

Some of the features of the park include a lake with a boathouse providing rentals, a playground, splash park, recreation centre, baseball fields, soccer fields, disk golf course, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts and some horseshoe pits.

The 3.2 kilometre loop trail explores the life of David Thompson and the history of the first two forts (oldest forts) which once stood on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River during the fur trade of the 1800s.

Gleniffer Lake is fed by the Red Deer River and measures 7 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide. It was named after a post office that once serviced the area long ago. The post office stood on the same site as the present day dam.

Pigeon Lake measures 22 kilometres long and 11 kilometres wide. The Pigeon Lake Provincial Park is situated on the southwest shore of the lake and was first established as a park in 1967.

Crimson Lake Provincial Park has a well-developed trail system. The Amerada Trail is a 10km gravel path loop around Crimson Lake near Rocky Mountain House Alberta.

Borden Park is a well maintained community park ideal for picnics and events. There are picnic sites with picnic tables and BBQ pits. One picnic site is developed with a shelter with power. Both operate on a first come, first serve basis.

3 Mile Bend includes a popular off leash dog park, a day use picnic area, a paved trail and a ski jump. You must be comfortable with dogs when visiting this park as there are many on most days.
