Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site is a popular sightseeing destination in the community of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada which is situated on the banks of the St. Mary's River in Algoma Country in Northern Ontario.

Located on the site is the Ermatinger Old Stone House and the Clergue Block House. The Ermatinger Old Stone House was originally built in 1814 and the Clergue Block House was later built in 1819.

To our knowledge the Ermatinger Old Stone House is the oldest home located northwest of Toronto. The historic home is surrounded by well maintained grounds and flower gardens. There are information signs and interactive displays on site.

The Ermatinger Old Stone House was built for a fur trader named Charles Ermatinger. Charles wore many hats during his lifetime in Canada. He was a fur trader, merchant, farmer and Justice of the Peace. And... in the "War of 1812" Charles Ermatinger was an officer.

Charles Ermatinger and his Ojibway First Nation wife named Mananowe (Charlotte) raised 13 children on these historic grounds. Mananowe was the daughter of an Ojibway First Nation Chief.

Year passed and the property became the home to many things like a missionary, hotel, sheriff department, YWCA, meeting hall, boarding house, social club, court house and apartment building. In 1964 the building was restored and protected as a historic site.

The Clergue Block House which is located on the same grounds as the the Ermatinger Old Stone House was once used to store munitions for the North West Fur Company.

In 1894 the Clergue Block House was later transformed into a log home for Francis Clergue. In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Mr. Clergue was an entrepreneur who created the local paper mill, lumber company, transportation, shipping, mining and steel industries.

Throughout the site are period actors (Hosts) available for answering your questions and providing guided tours and educational programs. The actors work and go about their day as if living back in the early 1900s. Actors can be seen cooking, weaving, gardening and sewing.
