Snow Angel on P.E.I.

Exploring Glaciers in Canada

A snow angel must be on my shoulder looking out over me, listening to me begging for more snow so the winter adventures can begin! I listen as the country is getting snow, but not me. Then today the snow landed on Prince Edward Island, Canada!

In Canada we are fortunate to have four beautiful and exciting seasons. The changing seasons provide us with changing landscapes, attitudes and adventures. But no season is as crisp, fresh and transforming as winter.

It is the arrival of snow, the drop in temperatures which yells out winter in Canada. And winter opens the door for a different breed of Canadian adventures. Life does not end after the snow falls. OH..no, in fact, here at EH Tourism, it is the beginning of a new change of pace. And for us that pace is all about activity and creativity during the winter months..

We are fortunate in Canada to enjoy two very diverse seasons – summer and winter. And because we welcome each season, embrace the possibilities, we enjoy adventure year round in Canada.

Yes, we have our nay sayers… the boo hoo people of the snow season. Many of which prefer sun year round and with the arrival of winter like to amp up their negative will about Canadian winters. Some take that negative energy and head south for the warmer climates so they can complain by a poolside or on a golf course. To some that is a great option but not to all. To many winter is a stay home time and play time in the mountains and up north.

The active in Canada welcome the winter season with open arms – some even begging for it to arrive sooner. Not many of us want to leave the snow of Canada during winter wonderland season.. why would we when we have a passion for an activity that can only be enjoyed in the winter season. And that is the ticket to ending winter negativity! If you love an activity only enjoyed in the winter then the winter is a welcomed season. If you sit on the couch, clicking channels, down on the weather then winter can bare down on you and so can negativity.

For us winter means play and work. Play is in the form of snow boarding, hockey, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Work means writing, creating and researching our EH Tourism websites.

When not playing, we work because we love what we do. It is better then TV. It is better then lying on a couch. It is better then s…. ok it is not better then that.

Winter in Canada is a celebrated season by many, a wonderful time to visit and a wonderful time to explore Canada… but like anything in life, you have to get off the couch and do it to enjoy it. Adventure does not come to you.. you must go to adventure.

For example here are just a few adventures enjoyed in the winter season in Canada. How many have you tried?

  • GO visit the dancing lights in the north of Canada called the Aurora Borealis.
  • GO snowmobiling with a tour group in the mountains.
  • GO downhill skiing, heli skiing or snowboarding on any of the many snow mountains in Canada.
  • VISIT a Nordic Centre and go cross country skiing.
  • Join a game of hockey on a local outdoor rink.
  • GO visit the Polar Bears near Hudson Bay.
  • VISIT a winter festival and ice sculptures.
  • GO snowshoeing in the backcountry. The scenery is very therapeutic.
  • RENT a mountain chalet in the mountains – wink, wink..
  • GO dog sledding with wilderness camping or a fancy lodge.
  • TRY ice climbing a frozen waterfall.
  • TAKE a wine tour and “roll the barrels” and crush some grapes.
  • TAKE a glacier tour in the Rockies
  • ARRANGE a sleigh ride with bells ringing and carols singing.
  • VISIT a natural hot spring – indoor or outdoor.
  • TAKE a gondola ride to a mountain top restaurant if you are a romantic.
  • ARRANGE a flight seeing tour of snow capped mountains

Thank you for the snow. Please send more soon. It is a short season, getting shorter quickly… way too short in our eyes.
