Dempster Hwy – Ogilvie Ridge

Today, we left from Dawson City in the Yukon for the village of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories.  It is a  trip that requires us traveling the 700 kilometre Dempster Highway. It is the only year round road that crosses into the Arctic Circle and leads to the community of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories.   It is a trip we have been waiting to take.

We left our campers at the campsite.  The road is well known for  many flat tires and broken axle casualties. We left early to get a good start on our long journey. As soon as we turned onto the Dempster Highway the road turned gravel.

Once we put 50 kilometres behind us the scenery began to take over. We drove by wetlands, grasslands, arctic tundra, jagged mountains and rolling hills.

One of the first pull out viewpoints with some far reaching scenery is the Ogilvie Lookout.  Here is a picture from the lookout.

Next stop the Arctic Circle!
