Best Hikes in Waterton Lakes National Park

Quick and Rewarding Hikes in Alberta Canada

Where to Find the Bears Hump Hike Trailhead

Waterton Lakes National Park is small and easy to navigate making the trailhead quite simple to locate. Bears Hump hike starts right across the street from the historic Prince of Whales Hotel. You'll notice this is not far past the park entrance gates on the right. This is an extremely popular hike in peak times and the parking lot can get full quite quickly. Weekdays, early mornings and evenings are your best times to have a quieter trail and easier parking abilities.

 Hiking the Bears Hump Trail

This has to be one of the easiest yet most rewarding hikes in Alberta. At least I think so. This trail is a steady uphill hike, but with the switchbacks it really helps break it down into easier sections. Additionally, there are a few rest areas on the way up this short trail. As a round trip in and back trail at only 2.8kms, it doesn't take long to complete this trail depending on your skill level. Alternatively, it is a fantastic beginner hike in the mountains. Just because it took someone 20 minutes to get to the top, and it make take you an hour or longer, it doesn't matter. The views are worth it and the trail is user-friendly, wide, easy to follow and offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Waterton townsite. It's worth the push to the top and is open year round!

Things to Do in Waterton Lakes National Park

There are no shortage of other things to do once you complete this short hike. Cameron Falls is a must stop spot while in this area. Take a drive up the Akamina Parkway to Cameron Lake. Explore downtown and all the fun shops and restaurants. Jump on the trails and go backcountry hiking camping for a few days. The opportunities are endless around here and Bears Hump doesn't take up a lot of time. So get out and explore Waterton while you're here!
