Missinaibi Provincial Park is a recreation and historical park destination located near the village of Chapleau, Ontario which is situated north of the the community of Wawa in Algoma Country, Ontario, Canada.

The northern Ontario park measures 99,090 hectares (244.6 acres) and the environment of the park consists of granite cliffs, boreal forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands and northern muskeg.

The Missinaibi Provincial Park is recognized as a popular destination for canoeing, boating and backcountry wilderness camping - as well as - for viewing ancient First Nation pictographs. In fact... the park is home to one of the biggest collections of First Nation pictographs in Ontario, Canada.

The park is also home to one of Ontario's largest free flowing rivers (Missinaibi River). The 755 kilometre long Missinaibi River route of Northern Ontario, Canada is a historic fur trading route. The river route travels northeast from Missinaibi Lake to the Moose River and then continues onto James Bay.

The river, lakes and wilderness park are a popular destination for adventures like canoeing, backpacking, camping, boating, fishing and sightseeing opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife sightings. Throughout the park there are various bird staging areas.

For overnight adventurers there are wilderness backcountry campsites and for day trippers there are picnic day use sites and boat launches located in the park. Canoes, boats and trailer storage rentals are available.

Throughout the wilderness sections of the park there are 103+ wilderness backcountry campsites. Most can only be accessed by boat and/or canoe. 36 of the wilderness campsites are situated along the shores of Barclay Bay on Missinaibi Lake which can be accessed by motorboat.

Motorized boats are only permitted on Missinaibi, Little Missinaibi and Brunswick Lakes. The Borasso Logging Camp Trail (the only developed hiking trail in the park) is a 6 kilometre long route accessed by boat/canoe only.

The park is a put-in point for many canoe paddle routes - some day trips, most overnight adventures.

The following are some of the more popular canoe routes :

(1) Missinaibi Lake to Little Missinaibi Lake Route : The canoe loop route is considered an easy paddle route with no white water rapids. The loop paddle route explores within the park boundaries.

(2) Missinaibi Lake to Mattice Route : The canoe route is considered a long haul, challenging paddle route measuring over 210 kilometres and includes 29 portages. It is a 7-9 day adventure reserved for expert paddlers.

(3) Mattice-Moosonee Route : Another long haul paddle route measuring over 322 Kilometres designed for expert canoeists. The route takes 7-9 days to complete and includes 7 portages.

(4) Shumka to Missinaibi Route : A semi challenging route measuring over 80 kilometres and includes 19 portages. The 4-5 day paddle starts and finishes in the park and has very little whitewater to contend with.

How To Get ToMissinaibi Provincial Park

Travel to the community of Wawa, Ontario. From Wawa travel Hwy #101 east to the village of Chapleau, Ontario. From Chapleau access Poplar Street and continue north for 81 kilometres (50.7 mi.) to the park.
