Castle Falls Campground Information

Castle Falls Campground is a fantastic rustic campgound with 45 unserviced sites looping through the beautiful forest of Castle Provincial Park in southern Alberta, Canada.

Finding Castle Falls Campground

You can find this awesome summer campground west of Pincher Creek and south of the Crowsnest Pass in Castle Provincial Park. From Pincher Creek you would take Hwy 507 to Hwy 774, then head south until you find the service road heading west with signs for the campsites. From that turn it's about 6km to the campground down a dusty gravel road.

Camping in Castle Provincial Park

Castle Falls Campground has 3 loops with 45 sites available to accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. The sites are non-serviced and come with a firepit and picnic table. Some sites are so close to the falls you get to enjoy that beautiful sound all night. You'll want to bring your own water on this camping adventure. There are pit vault toilets available at the day use area as well as throughout the campground loops, with wheelchair accessibility. You must book this campground in advance. With no cell service, you'll have to backtrack to town if you forget. No firewood available. Try to help stop the spread of disease, by buying local firewood. There are a few first come first serve campgrounds nearby if you strike out here but want to stay in the area. Designated loops and Lynx Creek sites for example. Backcountry camping is allowed only in Castle Wildland Provincial Park.

Activities to Enjoy near Castle Falls Campground

Swimming and Waterfall Adventures

There is a great day use area with firepits and picnic tables over top of Castle Falls. The parking lot fills up rather quickly on weekends so be prepared to walk a bit if you don't have a campsite in the park. A popular summer activity at this campground is waterfall jumping. Do so at your own risk. But swimming in the Castle River is a fun way to cool off on those hot summer days. The water is crystal clear and chilly enough to keep you feeling refreshed for awhile. No need to leave the campground as it's all located right there! Although, there are other water opportunities nearby at Beauvais Lake or even Butcher Lake. Get out paddleboarding and enjoy the summer vibes of this backcountry area.

Fishing the Castle Region of Alberta

Another fantastic outdoor activity to enjoy while camping in Castle Parks, would be fishing. Try your luck at some beautiful trout in Castle River, just steps from the campsite. You often see them just swimming around in there due to the crystal clear water of this mountain river. Alternatively, you could go on an adventure to Beaver Mines or Beauvais Lakes if river fishing isn't your thing. An Alberta fishing license is required as usual. Grab a copy of the regulations to help you know the rules in the area, as well as it can help you identify fish species if you're unsure. Trout can be hard to tell apart if not familiar with them.

Hiking Trails near Castle Waterfall

Hiking is a popular activity in the Castle Parks. From mountain summits, Interpretive loops, or just backcountry wandering. Service is limited down this way, so be prepared with where you want to go ahead of time. Conveniently, as you enter the Provincial Park, there are usually paper brochures with maps inside pointing to the different areas to explore. You'll find these near the large wooden signs upon entry. There are hikes for all skill levels around this campground.

Off-roading Trails in Castle

There are many multi-use trails in the park, and a lot of them are fantastic for ATVs or Side-by-sides. Climb through canyons and amazing backcountry to take in the amazing views of the Castle area from up high. Find some pieces of history on the North York Creek Plane Crash Trail in the north section of the park. The riding here is awesome and offers thrilling OHV adventures. No highway vehicles are allowed on the trails in Castle Parks. Castle Falls Rd, Pincher Creek No. 9, AB T0K 1C0

Weather in Southern Alberta Canada

Southern Alberta is known to be windy. The most windy area in all of Canada apparently. With that, be prepared for some windy days while out exploring down here. Luckily if you're staying low and not going to summit a mountain, the trees help block and protect from the wind on most days. But if you're going out into the open in a canyon or climbing above the treeline, expect some wind. Except the days you'd want it the most, those super hot summer days. Never seems to work out so conveniently. Castle Parks are open year round but the campground is closed and the road is gated closed in the winter months. OHVs with tracks are permitted during off season.

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

The wildlife down here is simply amazing and explains why this is such a gem of an area and preserved. Quite often we encounter bears, moose, deer, beavers, countless bird species, and so many more beautiful animals in the Castle region. Between the plants, animals and trees, there's reportedly over 200 rare species living throughout Castle Parks. Take some time to see how many you can find.

Summer Camping in Southern Alberta Canada

This area of Alberta is becoming more and more popular and it's definitely best to book ahead if wanting to stay here throughout the summer months. You may have some luck on weekdays if the weekends are booked. Otherwise watch for cancelations. I managed to get the best spot in the campground when a last minute cancelation happened around the time I was looking for a last minute camping trip. You never know! Get outside and explore Alberta!
