The first stop on our tour of the best cafes in St. John's, Newfound is The Battery Cafe, located in one of the most picturesque and historic neighbourhoods in the city. Specifically, The Battery Café is a warm and welcoming stop with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city's iconic harbour. Located at the base of Signal Hill, this beloved café is a favourite among locals, hikers, and visitors alike. As a result, it is the perfect place to pair with a hike along the nearby North Head Trail, the start of which is about a 10 minute walk along Battery Rd. We stopped in for a hearty breakfast before setting out on this strenuous but rewarding 1.7 km trail, fuelling up for the coastal climb and spectacular views.  In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we returned afterwards for a fresh brewed coffee to warm up and unwind after our walk.

The Battery Cafe's menu features freshly brewed coffee alongside satisfying breakfast options, homemade soups, sandwiches, and tempting pastries, all prepared with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.  Furthermore, the the café's cozy, nautical-inspired décor reflects St. John's rich coastal heritage, while a small outdoor patio offers a sunny spot for pet owners, smokers, or anyone wanting to soak up the scenery. With friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere, and its unbeatable location next to one of St. John's most scenic coastal hikes, The Battery Café stood out as one of our favourite stops on our coffee-and-adventure journey through the city.

Boreal Café: Nature-Inspired Vibes for T'Railway Trail Explorers

Next up is the Boreal Café, a modern coffee shop located in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland with a nature-inspired design that makes it the perfect stop after a day of outdoor exploration. Interestingly, the Boreal Café has a Scandinavian-inspired interior that brings the outdoors in with natural light, clean lines, and a nature-themed decor. As such, with its spacious, inclusive, relaxed ambience and its strong sense of community, this local favourite pairs perfectly with a walk along the nearby T'Railway Trail. In fact, it is situated just a 10 minute walk from the start of the T'Railway Trail, Newfoundland's 883 km section of the Trans Canada Trail, meaning it provides easy access to one of the city's most accessible and scenic multi-use paths. 

The Boreal Café serves an impressive range of artisanal coffee drinks, from classic espresso-based favourites to seasonal specialties that reflect the changing Newfoundland weather. As such, choosing from the tempting selection of freshly baked pastries, wholesome breakfasts, and light lunches made with locally sourced ingredients was no easy task. Popular options include their homemade granola, avocado toast, and gourmet sandwiches, but we ultimately opted for a warm, fresh-baked fruit scone and a rich chocolate chip cookie to enjoy alongside our iced coffees. In our opinion, with its friendly knowledgeable staff and relaxed vibe, the Boreal Café captures the spirit of St. John's and stands out as a must-visit stop on our tour of the best cafes in St. John's Newfoundland - especially when paired with a refreshing stroll along the T'Railway Trail.

Memorial Café: Refuel After a Fun Pub Crawl

Next on our list of the best cafes in St. John's, Newfoundland is the Memorial Café, a favourite with the locals that is tucked away on Duckworth St. right in the heart of the historic downtown area. This small, cozy, eclectic space with its relaxed, European-inspired feel invites you to linger with a hot drink or a good book. In fact, this charming cafe became one of our go-to spots while visiting St. John's, whether it was for a quick snack while sightseeing in the downtown area, a hearty all-day breakfast after doing a classic St. John's Pub Crawl, or simply a spot to connect with locals over a warming cup of joe after a walk along the waterfront.

The Memorial Cafe's menu is filled with comforting favourites, making it an ideal stop whether you're starting your day slowly or refuelling after a late night. Their all-day breakfasts feature items like fluffy scrambled eggs or savoury toasted bagels, while signature dishes like butter chicken with naan have earned five star reviews from the regulars. In addition, a variety of sandwiches are perfect for every occasion, and we can personally vouch for their strawberry tarts and other pastries, which paired perfectly with their rich, hot cups of coffee.  In sum, friendly staff and a welcoming vibe make it easy to settle in at the Memorial Cafe, whether you're swapping pub crawl stories with friends, enjoying a quiet moment to yourself, or chatting with the friendly locals. As a result, with its comforting food, excellent coffee, and ideal location near some of the city's best nightlife, the Memorial Café is a must-visit stop when pairing St. John's café scene with its many outdoor activities and iconic pub culture.

Coffee Matters: A Perfect Break After Walking Rennie's River Trail

Finally, a standout on any list of the best cafés in St. John's, Newfoundland, Coffee Matters is a welcoming coffee shop that offers a familiar, comforting atmosphere for both visitors and locals alike. Situated on the corner of Military and Kings Bridge roads, it is just steps away from the historic Bannerman Park, and a 10 minute walk from Rennie's River Trail, a beautiful forested pathway that connects Quidi Vidi Lake to the Memorial University campus. As a result, it was the perfect place for us to stop after our stroll along the Rennie's River Trail, where we enjoyed the brilliant fall colours and the soothing sounds of the creek. 

With its contemporary atmosphere, Coffee Matters is not quite home, not quite work, but something comfortably in between. With spacious tables, free WiFi, and a relaxed atmosphere that encourages patrons to stay awhile, this is a great place to get some work done or simply relax. Known for its thoughtfully sourced and expertly roasted coffee, the café also offers a rotating selection of baked goods and light fare, including soups, salads, wraps, and sandwiches that change with the seasons. During our fall visit we enjoyed delicious pumpkin scones and lattes which were so good we returned for lunch the following the day. As a result, with its warm lighting, relaxed seating, and gentle hum of conversation and espresso machines Coffee Matters is an excellent choice for those seeking to pair caffeine, community, and outdoor exploration in St. John's, Newfoundland.
