Burnt Head Trail Cupids Newfoundland and Labrador Canada

Popular path for coastal hiking, birdwatching, snowshoeing and heritage

Burnt Head Trail near Cupids NL is an easy 3.5 km coastal trail on the Avalon Peninsula. The trailhead is a beautiful day trip, only a 55 minute drive from St. John's Newfoundland. Dogs are permitted but must be on leash. The landscape is very rugged and extreme caution was needed near dangerous cliffs along the excursion. Sea birds such as northern gannets, osprey and bald eagles have been spotted there. Furthermore, in the Winter months the path is great for an exciting seaside adventure.

Along the trail I experienced small waterfalls, meadows, rugged picturesque landscape, wave watching and a jagged natural sea arch carved by the ocean.  In fact, the geological feature is so impressive a 17ft boat can fit through the passage. I have also uniquely experienced the arch by sea via Sea Doo - aka Jet Ski. In the late summer season wild island blueberries are abundant along this section of coastline making it popular for berry picking.

Coastal hiking trail takes hikers through resettled communities and abandoned root cellars

Remains of old settlements can be seen along the Burnt Head Trail in Cupids Newfoundland. Traditional underground root cellars can be seen scattered in the meadow. These cellars were using for storaging vegetables over Winter to spare them from frost. In the summer the underground storage was used for keeping items cool. Additionally, interactive signs are present through the walking trail and have a QR code can be scanned to learn more information on the site. In closing, add this informative and scenic trek to your east coast Canada bucket list!
