Golden BC with Kicking Horse River Lodge

Golden Experience with Kicking Horse River Lodge

“The beautiful craftsmanship, the architecture, is part of the whole attraction of staying with Kicking Horse River Lodge. And then add in the wilderness photography on the walls, the comfortable clean rooms, the common areas, the many services, the hospitality and, of course, the amazing front yard views and you have a real winner.”

The Purcell, Selkirk and, nearby, Dogtooth Mountains all have a special place in my heart. Ok… busted, all mountains have a special place in my heart! However, these mountains are so majestic, powerful, beautiful and a top spot for travel adventures year round when exploring in Golden BC, Canada. The latter is a biggy for us as promoting travel in Canada is how we make a living. So… you can imagine the excitement I felt when I arrived in Golden, British Columbia, Canada – the heart of Kicking Horse Country and the home to the Purcell and Selkirk Mountain Ranges.

Kicking Horse River Lodge

The “cherry-on-the-sundae” for this trip to Golden, BC was my log-cabin like accommodations – The Kicking Horse River Lodge (www.KHRL.com). The timber frame lodge is beautifully crafted with wood throughout giving it a high alpine European personality. The beautiful craftsmanship, the architecture, is part of the whole attraction of staying with Kicking Horse River Lodge. And then add in the wilderness photography on the walls, the comfortable clean rooms, the common areas, the many services, the hospitality and, of course, the amazing front yard views and you have a real winner.

The Kicking Horse River Lodge is blessed with fantastic views and is ideally located for adventure when in Golden BC. The lodge enjoys great scenery as it fronts the Columbia River and looks out onto the Dogtooth Mountain Range. Across the river are some epic cross country mountain biking routes like the Moonraker and CBT Trails. Just west of the lodge are the birding and canoeing adventures of the Columbia Wetlands. Located east of the lodge is the skiing and snowboarding destination called Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Just down the street is the Village of Golden and the river rafting destination known as Kicking Horse River. So now you understand why we are so excited to stay with the Kicking Horse River Lodge on this visit to Golden, BC.

Main Floor Common Area

The timber framed Kicking Horse River Lodge consists of 3 levels of floors. For now we will refer to them as the lower, main and upper floors. The check-in desk (reception area) is located at the main entrance on the main floor. Just pass the reception desk is the main lobby and/or common living area. It is a grand room with massive log pillars, beautiful photography on the walls, high timber frame wood ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. Just outside the windows is a patio area with seating.

The main lobby is decorated with 2 big leather sofas (couches to us Canadians) and are surrounded by a good selection of tables and chairs. The main feature of the room is a large brick fireplace. Behind the fireplace is the Bugaboo Cafe with a commercial kitchen (book for large groups only). Down the hallway there are 5 accommodation rooms that can sleep 2 adults each. Each room includes a telephone, television, washroom, internet and a tea/coffee station.

Lower Floor Common Area

On the lower level of the Kicking Horse River Lodge in Golden, BC is another common living area. This one is decorated with a big screen TV, more couches and some tables and chairs. Just off the common area is a full self-service kitchen with all the tools required for cooking and storing food. Next door to the kitchen is a laundry room and, nearby, are some lockers for safe storage. The sleeping rooms on the lower level are referred to as “Dorms”. There are 2 “Dorms” totalling 16 beds (all bunk-beds). Servicing the “Dorms” are 2 large washrooms with showers – one male, one female.

The upper level of the lodge is where my room was located. I loved my room! The wood accents, the clean comfortable queen size bed, the views of the mountains and river outside my window and the stairs leading up to a loft (2 more single beds). I love lofts for some reason. Maybe it is because of the country cottage feeling they give off. Anyway… on this occasion I had no friends to share the extra beds with as I was traveling solo. Each room on the upper level includes a telephone, television, washroom, internet and a tea/coffee station. My room had a gold medal view.

My Accommodation

Time is always too short on these road trips. I never seem to do everything I want to do. I am lucky if I get to do 2% of everything I want to do on my wish list. Although, lets be honest, at times my wish list is not realistic in any shape or form. But – then again – I am OK with that because that 2% can feel like a 100% when meeting and going on adventures with the right good people. On this visit to Golden BC I was fortunate to spend some quality time with Alison of Kicking Horse River Lodge.

Alison (my host) and I got together one morning for breakfast at her restaurant called the Big Bend Café. We laughed. We talked rafting. We talked tourism. We shared stories. We clicked. We enjoyed each others company and that is special in my world. As I have said on many occasions, I am so lucky to meet quality people in this industry. In so many ways my breakfast with Alison may seem trivial to some, but it was the world to me. It was a very nice gesture. A gesture I hope leads to a long friendship.

The Kicking Horse River Lodge in Golden, BC, Canada provided me country comforts and made me feel welcomed every day. Thank you for your hospitality!
