Located deep within the rugged wilderness, this deeply sacred site is known as “The Teaching Rocks.” It protects the largest known concentration of Indigenous rock carvings (petroglyphs) in Canada, where ancient, weathered stone depicts turtles, snakes, birds, and human figures carved centuries ago.

Before hitting the trails, visitors can explore the Learning Place Visitor Centre. This facility offers an incredible opportunity to discover the rich traditions and deep cultural heritage of the Ojibway (Nishnaabe) people through the timeless teachings of the medicine wheel. Beyond its profound historical significance, the park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding hiking routes present excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, winding through quiet forests and leading toward the stunning shores of McGinnis Lake. This bright blue-green body of water is one of only a handful of meromictic lakes in Canada, meaning its unique physical layers of water never intermix.

Planning your trip to Petroglyphs Provincial Park requires careful attention to the schedule, as access is strictly managed to protect this sensitive environment. Petroglyphs operating hours are daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Keep in mind that there is absolutely no vehicle access permitted after 4:00 pm, and all vehicles must exit the property before the gates close at 5:00 pm. Additionally, the park is completely closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the Spring and Fall seasons, with the sole exception of Holiday Mondays.
