North of North Experience: An Arctic Adventure in Toronto

What happens when a little piece of the Canadian Arctic comes to Toronto? We found out at the North of North Experience at Illuminarium Toronto, right in the Distillery District!

For me, this adventure had an extra-special connection. I was lucky enough to travel to Iqaluit, Nunavut, twice in October and November 2016, and I left a little piece of my heart there. So, stepping into this immersive Arctic experience brought back some wonderful memories.

North of North Experience at Illuminarium Toronto

First, we were transported into the world of North of North, the hit CBC series set in the fictional Arctic community of Ice Cove. The experience featured Arctic scenery, iconic wardrobe from the show and plenty of interactive fun.

Then, it was time to get adventurous! We climbed aboard a snowmobile, tried our hand at linocut printing, and even stepped up to play Inuktitut baseball. The baseball game is one of the fun cultural elements featured in North of North, and it definitely makes for a memorable experience!

North of North does a wonderful job of showcasing Inuit culture, language, music and contemporary life in the North. And listen closely to the background of my video, where you’ll hear the beautiful sound of Inuit throat singing.

Even better, the series was filmed in Iqaluit, the very place that holds such a special spot in my own travel memories.

This experience was only in Toronto for one weekend, but the adventure doesn’t have to end there! You can continue exploring the North by watching North of North. And even better, Season 2 has just premiered!

Toronto may be far from Nunavut, but for a little while, we felt like we had travelled all the way to the Arctic.
