We stopped to read about the landscape of Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary before exploring farther. The East and West Gaetz Lakes are remnants of an old oxbow lake created by the Red Deer River, with a landslide eventually dividing the original lake into two. It was a neat bit of Red Deer natural history to discover right outside Kerry Wood Nature Centre.
