Grande Cache Visitors Centre

The Grande Cache Tourism & Interpretive Centre was easily one of the most surprisingly interesting stops from our Grande Cache weekend. Located right along Highway 40, this is definitely not a place I would rush into just to grab a map and leave. Give yourself some time. There is a lot packed inside this mountain-town visitor centre.

We wandered through exhibits covering Grande Cache wildlife, local history, geology, fishing, mining, trapping and the surrounding mountains. There are animal displays, historic equipment, local legends and authors, artwork, rocks and fossils, hands-on features and plenty of information that helps explain the landscape you are about to explore. The official exhibits also include Ice Age artifacts, dinosaur tracks, Indigenous heritage, fur-trade history and information about local industry.

Little Seeker had plenty to investigate too. Between the touchable fur display, wooden finger labyrinths, children's activities and other interactive features, this was one of those educational stops that didn't really feel like an educational stop. There is also a gift shop and art gallery, so leave a little extra time if you like browsing locally themed souvenirs and artwork.

And don't head back to the vehicle quite yet. Birds Eye View Interpretive Park is right outside the centre, with interpretive walking trails, picnic areas and historical buildings. We were able to wander the park and loop our way back toward the same parking area, making the Tourism & Interpretive Centre and neighbouring park an easy two-for-one stop while exploring Grande Cache.

If you're wondering whether the Grande Cache Tourism & Interpretive Centre is worth stopping at, my answer is absolutely yes. Before we had even really started exploring Grande Cache, I walked out of the centre already knowing there was more here than we could possibly fit into one weekend. It was the kind of first stop that made me excited to get out and explore, while also making me pretty sure I’d need to come back again.

These books were quite fun and unique. My neice picked up a couple of them. The reading journal one has a really cool layout and a fun way to track the books you read.
