Essential Hiking and Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve Tips for an Unforgettable Adventure

If you are planning an overnight excursion, camping at the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve is permitted at six official campsites designated by Ontario Parks. Furthermore, camping and fire-making are strictly banned across the Barrens and adjoining lands, except at these authorized spots. Each designated backcountry camping site is equipped with a fire cairn and a primitive bathroom facility.

However, no running water, cell service, or structures are provided. Additionally, all waste must be carried out by visitors. While these backcountry sites are currently offered on a first-come, first-served basis, reservation systems may be implemented soon.  

Before packing your gear, key regulations must be understood. All official locations are designated by an orange sign featuring a tent icon. Furthermore, camping and fire-making are strictly banned across the Barrens and adjoining lands, except at these authorized spots. 

Therefore, proper preparation for hiking in mud and bugs is required. Approved firewood can be purchased locally, as tree-cutting is strictly prohibited.

The geology of this stunning Ontario landscape is characterized by low ridges of Precambrian Shield formed 2.5 billion years ago. Subsequently, ancient soils were scoured away by glacial activity. Consequently, terrain conditions remain rugged.
