Explore the Sundre Nature Boardwalk and Discover the Red Deer River
A Volunteer-Built Nature Trail in Sundre, Alberta
If you’re looking for an easy way to experience nature in Sundre, Alberta, the Sundre Nature Boardwalk is definitely worth adding to your adventure list!
We explored this lovely trail with fellow adventure seekers Lisa and Janet, along with Janet’s husband, Peter, and my husband, Jeff.
The Sundre Nature Boardwalk offers a full loop of approximately 1 kilometre, making it an easy addition to your day in Sundre. The trail takes you through the natural landscape and leads you to the Red Deer River, where you can pause, take in the scenery and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
What makes this little adventure even more special is that the boardwalk was completely volunteer-built. Constructed in 2024, it was designed with the surrounding marsh habitat in mind, allowing visitors to explore the area while respecting the natural environment. It has been lovingly maintained, and it shows. Along the route, interpretive signs provide information about the local plants and wildlife, making this more than just a pleasant walk. Best of all, the boardwalk is completely accessible.
Along the way, you'll get a chance to slow down and appreciate the surrounding nature. Plus, because the trail is relatively short, it can easily be combined with other things to see and do around Sundre.
After your walk, make sure to stop at the Sundre Visitor Centre for more information about the area and ideas for your next adventure. And, you’ll want to check out Backwoods Bakery for a tasty treat!
So, if you're exploring Sundre, Alberta, don't overlook this charming nature experience. The Sundre Nature Boardwalk is a great place to stretch your legs, connect with nature and discover another beautiful corner of Alberta.

Little seeker and I love that trail. I'm also super impressed that basically every plant photo sign looked identical to the actual plants at that time of the year! I love the woodwork done along the trail by the volunteers. The neat angles and corners of the wood had me just as impressed as the nature around it
