For three days every September the Lucky Lion Night Market comes to Victoria Park in downtown London, Ontario, Canada. This Pan-Asian food and cultural festival brings together flavours and traditions from across Asia while transforming the park into a lively and colourful gathering spot at the heart of the community.
The concept began in Hamilton in 2019, created by Vietnamese-Canadian entrepreneurs Linh Vu and Julia Park through the Sprout Organization. The event was designed as a large community celebration that reflected the diversity of Asian cultures and cuisines. It has since expanded to other Ontario communities, including London.
As evening settled over Victoria Park the delicious smell of barbecued meat and seafood filled the air and the energetic beat of K-Pop music drifted out from the nearby bandstand. Food was clearly the star attraction. As we made our way among the vibrant food stalls the walkways were crowded with visitors carrying skewers and sampling an extraordinary variety of street food: grilled oysters and squid, Japanese sandos and onigiri, Korean corndogs, Thai beef noodle soup, bao, popcorn chicken, barbecue and plenty of sweets. Candied fruit, mango desserts, tropical juices and freshly made sugar-cane drinks provided something for those with a sweet tooth—or simply in need of refreshment.
The market extends beyond food. Small vendors offer Asian-themed merchandise, handmade crafts, candy and collectibles, while attractive light installations provide irresistible photo opportunities. A giant illuminated Lucky Lion backdrop was particularly popular, with visitors lining up to capture their own festival memories.
Entertainment is also an important part of the experience. The bandstand hosted energetic K-pop dance performances by BRDRLESS, WAK and VIVO, bringing contemporary Asian pop culture into the mix. And, of course, there are the lions. Chinese lion dancing provides a connection to traditional culture and is central to the Lucky Lion identity.
For a summer evening in London, Lucky Lion is an experience to be savoured slowly: follow the aromas, listen to the music, try something unfamiliar and enjoy the atmosphere as the lights take over the park.
