Things To Do in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada

 

Here is a Cochrane Things To Do List for some of the more popular summer and winter adventures and activities enjoyed while visiting and exploring, in and around, Northern Ontario, Canada including the surrounding communities of Smooth Rock Falls and Fraserdale.

cochraneHooks, Rods & Reels:Off road to a remote lake, fly-in to a remote lodge for an opportunity to fish for brook trout, northern pike and walleye to name a few. There are guides, lodges, outposts, wilderness resorts and charters in the region.

Sleep under the Stars:There are serviced and non serviced campsites in Greenwater Park and in the local community campgrounds and there are wilderness campsites located in the backcountry accessed via backpacking and canoeing. 

Sightseeing Tours : Hop a train and explore the true north of Ontario visiting the villages of Moosonee and Moose Factory. Board a plane and go flightseeing. Travel a cable ferry on Abitibi River aboard the Cassiopeia IV. 

History Stories : Learn more about the history of the region at any of the local museums and/or the Heritage Village in Cochrane including a snowmobile museum.

Touring : The highways and roads in the region are all popular routes for touring in a car or by motorcycle. Along the route are rest stops and parks.

Go Swimming :Swim with the polar bears at the Polar Bear Conservation & Education Habitat Centre or stay in Cochrane and swim in Lake Commando while enjoying a sandy beach. Pack up the car and visit Greenwater Park and its sandy beaches.

Day Hiking : Enjoy a day walking the 2.2 km path around Lake Commando in Cochrane or on any of the wilderness recreation trails in the backcountry region and in the Greenwater Provincial Park.

Sights Around Town: Check out some of the sightseeing destinations in the region around Cochrane like the lookout points near Abitibi Canyon and Mattagami River near the Village of Smooth Rock Falls. There are also some elevation views at the Long Sault Rapids Hydroelectric Dam.

Off Roading :Like remote wilderness? If so then bring or rent an ATV, dirt bike or 4x4 and explore the hundreds of kilometres of backcountry gravel roads and trails in the region connecting to remote lakes and rivers. 

Birding :With so many roads and trails leading into the backcountry and accessing hundreds of remote lakes and rivers it makes so much sense that birdwatching in the region is popular. Bring your camera.

Paddles Up : There is a good selection of lakes and rivers in the region which are accessed easily and there are long-haul canoe routes which last for days covering hundreds of kilometres. Pick your adventure and plan well. 

Sledding :Snowmobiling is a top notch adventure in the region during the winter season. There are over 700+ kilometres of maintained snowmobile trails to explore connecting to remote lakes, communities and parks. 

Fishing Ice: Hundreds of frozen lakes located in the remote backcountry to fish. Ice shacks populate some of the easy-access lakes, well others, are operated in the wilderness by remote lodges. Come and see what you are missing.

Cross Country Ski : Locally in Cochrane there are over 30+ kilometres of groomed ski trails for xc skiing.The local ski club maintains the trails behind the curling club in Cochrane.
