for some of the more popular summer and winter adventures and activities enjoyed while visiting and exploring, in and around, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and the surrounding communities of Echo Bay, Hilton Beach, Searchmont, Batchawana Bay, Bruce Mines, Thessalon, Heyden, Havilland, Harmony, Richard's Landing, Mississagi Valley and Blind River.

Visit an Attraction : In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario families can plan a visit to a wildlife zoo, forestry research centre, dam, zip line, special event, museum, concert, rodeo or festival. Adults enjoy a night life at a casino, theatre, orchestra or race track.

Discover History : There is a bush plane museum and historic sites like the Frontier Village, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal Historic Site, the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site and the Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site.

Paddle : Paddle canoes and kayaks on the waterways of Sault Ste. Marie like St. Mary's River, Lake Superior and Lake Heron visiting islands like St. Joseph Island. Paddle, camp and portage remote lakes and rivers in the backcountry.

Rod & Reel :Fish for lake trout and trophy size coho and pink salmon in Lake Superior, St. Mary's River and Lake Heron's North Channel. Or fly into a remote fishing lodge or outpost in the backcountry. Tours, fishing charters and guides located throughout the region. (list of tours & guides )

Tours & Guides : Book a boat tour, rail tour or sign up for a kayak adventure of the lakes and canal locks. Board a floatplane and go flightseeing. Sign up for a fishing charter. There are many types of tours and guides in the region.

Hike Nature : Visit one of the many parks in the region and hike the trails leading to waterfalls, lakes, rivers, historic sites and remote locations. 

Bike and Cycle : Mountain bikers will enjoy the many trails in the Hiawatha Highlands and on the local ski mountains. Cyclist will enjoy the paved roads connecting with the villages, communities and parks.

Shop Art and Gifts : Shop the gift boutiques, art galleries and artisan studios in Sault Ste. Marie region. Then venture north 70 km to Agawa and shop First Nation for some moccasins, masks, cloths, native art, paintings, carvings and pottery.

Boating & Sailing : The historic canal system connects boaters and sailors to the Great Lakes of Ontario. Explore Lake Superior, St. Mary's River, Lake Heron and Georgian Bay. A good selection of full service marinas line the shoreline.

Day Tripping : Ride the rails to Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park. Ride the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry from Manitoulin Island to Tobermory on Lake Heron's Bruce Peninsula. Drive the coastal route (Hwy #17 north) connecting Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa, Ontario.

Dive! Dive ! Scuba diving for shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Rentals, tours and guides lead to dive sites like Pointe aux Pins, Pointe Louise, Sugar Island and shipwrecks like the 1901 Sagamore (whale vessel)

Beaches : Visit the sandy beaches at the Pancake Provincial Park, the Batchewana Bay Provincial Park and near Gros Cap. Swimming, sandcastles and scenery. 

Plan for an Event : Plan your trip around a Sault Ste. Marie event or festival like a First Nation Pow Wow or a festival celebrating maple syrup, music, art, theatre, dance, food, tradition and/or culture.

Downhill & Boarding : The thrill of downhill skiing and snowboarding is enjoyed at local mountain destinations like Searchmont, Buttermilk, Alpine & Heyden. Searchmont being the biggest with developed services and all types of ski runs and a snowboard park. 

Sledding : 400 kilometres of snowmobile trails are in the Sault Ste. Marie area. These trails connect to another 2,500 km of trails in Algoma Country which connect to 49,000 km of snowmobile trails in the province of Ontario.

Cross Country Ski : Trails, backcountry roads, frozen lakes and rivers become popular for cross country skiing. The Hiawatha Highlands and the Stockley Creek Nordic Area are developed and maintained cross country ski destinations.
