Communities connected by a very simple, paved and gravel, network of roads.\u00a0 Allot of that road ends up on our jeeps and campers in the form of mud.<\/p>\n<p>From Fort Simpson, we fueled up, took the river ferry and were back on the paved and gravel Mackenzie Hwy making our way\u00a0 to the Canadian Shield and the capital of the Northwest Territory, Yellowknife.\u00a0\u00a0 Yellowknife is going to be our base camp for a few days while we explore and research.<\/p>\n<p>Driving the gravel and paved Mackenzie Hwy we passed by wetlands, tundra, lakes and grasslands until we hooked up with Highway #3 which is the only road route leading to Yellowknife.\u00a0 Highway #3 was paved and a nice change. It also passes through a Bison Wildlife Park.\u00a0 And from what we know about Bison from our trip to the Yukon, we should be getting up close and personal with some of\u00a0 them as they walk the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Watching for wildlife on the highways is a big thing in Canada.\u00a0 Please always pay attention.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a picture of a Bison walking alongside the jeep from a distance (tele photo lens comes in handy)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the NWT there are big distances between many of the communities.
