Tis the season… to be a flake.

Snowboarding in Canada

Snow is falling in Western & Northern Canada and the sun is shining in Eastern Canada. Best of both worlds.

When the weather starts to disagree from one side of the country to the other there is only one clear conclusion… winter is just around the corner. Yahoooo!

Regardless of some of the rumors out there in the global tourism chat rooms of life there is much more to Canada during the winter season besides some popular mis-beliefs like hanging out in igloos (which is not true by the way), building snow people (OK, we do build snow people) and wearing traditional Canadian winter fashion head wear like a toque (Canadian lingo for a warm winter hat).

Storm Watching in Canada

The only flake in Canada which grabs headlines are the ones falling from the sky.

To some of us crazy Canucks winter season can never come fast enough. In our minds leaving for warmer climates is a waste of a good Canadian season.

Canada has one of the best winter tourism seasons in the world! Why would you want to leave? Instead of leaving just get active and winter takes on a whole new meaning.

Instead of always living in one season and always exposed to the heat of the sun like in some tourism destination around the globe… many here in Canada, not all, enjoy all four seasons and during the winter season many of us embrace the snow on our mountains, the freezing over of our lakes, the cuddles around a warm fire, the forming of icicles hanging off the eaves troughs of our homes and the beginning of hockey season.

There are so many tourism operations and destinations in Canada where the winter season is the peak season.

Here are some of the best all time Canadian winter tourism activities and winter destinations which have a special place in our hearts here at EH Canada Tourism.

TOP 5 Winter Adventures enjoyed by the EH Canada Team.

  1. Snowboarding : There is nothing more exhilarating than snowboarding in the trees and on powder snow. Bro and I are tree boarders we love it in the backcountry dodging in and out of trees, grabbing as much air as possible and finding untouched powder snow.
  2. Northern Lights : It is really an amazing sight, well worth the effort to experience (a bucket list item) to view the northern skies when they transform into massive floating waves of color reminiscent of their springtime cousin the rainbow. There are blues, oranges, reds, yellow and purples. Think of it as the winter rainbow of the skies.
  3. Spa and Wellness Retreats: If, for some uncanny reason, the winter outdoors is not your thing… do not fret… in Canada we have a smorgasbord of wellness centres and spas waiting to provide a day or week of pampering.
  4. Storm Watching: Watching storms is one of the most underrated winter activities in Canada. On the west coast and east coast, when the winds pick up, the coastline puts on an amazing show. You can safely view massive waves crashing the shores, you can walk blindly in a cloud of ocean mist and you will hear the thunder of the ocean world at your feet. There resorts which provide the rain gear and rubber boots while nature does the rest.
  5. Ice Fishing : There is something real special about sitting in a wooden shack out in the middle of a frozen lake with a warm cup of coffee, tunes in the background and surrounded by the chatter of good friends. Regardless if you catch a fish… the company, the many moments of laughter and the peaceful atmosphere is very therapeutic.

TOP 5 Winter Destinations visited by the EH Canada Team (so far).

  1. Kelowna, BC: The Big White Ski Mountain is one of the best tree snowboarding ski hill destinations we have ever enjoyed. Love the backside of the mountain away from the crowds.
  2. Jasper, Alberta: One of the main resort communities of the Rockies. The crowds are a tad smaller than in the more well known Banff area. However there is no less of an adrenaline rush boarding on the nearby resort mountains.
  3. Tofino, BC : Walking the miles of sandy beach in an ocean mist with waves crashing at your feet. It is hard to even describe how cool it sounds and feels.
  4. Mount Tremblant, Quebec: Being that we grew up on the west coast of Canada. Visiting the mountain and communities in Mount Tremblant, Quebec was like visiting another country. The language, the architecture and the atmosphere was just suburb.
  5. Whistler, BC: The winter activities and facilities are top notch. The ski runs are long and there are many to explore. The only down size is that everything is so expensive.
