Grande Cache Labyrinth Park
Walk an 11-Circuit Stone Labyrinth in Grande Cache
Grande Cache Labyrinth Park is a unique outdoor attraction in Grande Cache, Alberta,
Canada, overlooking the Smoky River Valley and surrounding mountain scenery.
The approximately 21-metre (70-foot) labyrinth features 11 winding circuits outlined with stones. Unlike a maze, there are no dead ends or wrong turns. One continuous pathway twists toward the centre before leading visitors back out again.
Built in 2007, the labyrinth is free to visit and makes an interesting stop while exploring Grande Cache.
Walking the Grande Cache Labyrinth
The stone pathway winds back and forth much farther than you might expect when first looking at the
labyrinth.
Some visitors walk labyrinths for quiet reflection or meditation, while others simply enjoy following the route, taking photos or watching the pathway unfold. Kids can have fun finding their way to the centre too.
Visitors should avoid moving or climbing on the stones so the original design remains intact.
Mountain and Smoky River Valley Views
Part of the appeal is the setting.
The open park provides views across the Smoky River Valley and toward the mountains surrounding Grande Cache. With very little blocking the view, it is also a good spot for landscape photos and watching changing weather move through the valley.
Difficulty and Accessibility
This is an easy walk with no elevation change around the main park area.
The labyrinth surface is gravel and compacted ground, with stones marking the edges of the pathway. The spaces between the stones are fairly narrow, so while the park itself is accessible, the actual labyrinth route may not accommodate wheelchairs or wider mobility devices.
Visitors who cannot use the labyrinth pathway can still access the surrounding park and view the design.
Weather can affect conditions, particularly during wet, snowy or icy periods.
Parking and Location
A small parking lot is located directly beside the park.
Labyrinth Park sits just off a gravel roadway (Fireman's Pit Road) beside Lions Park, which also makes a handy landmark when trying to find it.
From Highway 40, enter Grande Cache and follow local roads toward 104 Street and the south side of town.
Lions Park is an added bonus for families travelling with children.
How Long Should You Allow?
Plan approximately 20 to 45 minutes for a visit.
That gives enough time to walk the labyrinth, explore the park and take a few photos. Visitors who want to slow down and enjoy the views may stay longer.
When to Visit The Grande Cache Labyrinth
Grande Cache Labyrinth Park can be visited year-round.
Summer and fall generally offer the easiest walking conditions. During winter, snow may cover portions of the stones and ice can make the pathway slippery.
Grande Cache weather can change quickly, so dress for current conditions.
